What is Naturopathy and How is it Different?

Are you wondering what Naturopathy is? Well, you are not alone.

When I was in Naturopathic college many years ago, my brother asked me for the second time.

“So… what do you study, again?”

I told him that I study Naturopathy.

His response was, “So, you want to be a Naturalist?”

Most have heard of the term, but many are unsure of what is Naturopathy and how a Naturopath works?

What is Naturopathy?

The term Naturopathy is an umbrella term; it is a natural therapy that is deep-rooted in the Western tradition. It encompasses many modalities such as Western herbal medicine, Nutrition, Homeopathy, Flower essence and even Massage therapy.

Due to the broadness of Naturopathic medicine, many Naturopaths specialise in a few modalities while having working knowledge in others. For example, a Naturopath may choose to specialise in Herbal medicine and Nutrition, while others in Homeopathy, etc. For this reason, each Naturopath works in a variety of ways and consequently, have a different approach to treatment.

How is Naturopathy different?

Naturopathy is different than conventional medicine in a variety of ways. One of the differences is in how the two systems of medicine view health and disease. Rather than viewing each organ system separately, Naturopathy sees the body as a whole and all organ systems are interconnected. Every organ system interacts with each other; any dysfunction in one will inevitably impact the function of others.

Another difference is in how Naturopathy sees a disease condition. As the name suggests, Naturopathic philosophy believes diseases occur when we stray far from how nature intended us to be. Human beings thrive when we obey mother nature, which means consuming natural food and following a natural lifestyle.

Perhaps what set Naturopathy apart from conventional modern medicine is the way Naturopathy treats disease. Naturopathy seeks to address the whole body systemically rather than only focusing on the diseased organ. The therapy brings the body back into a state of balance; therefore, the body can utilise its innate healing intelligence to heal itself. To further support the body’s innate healing intelligence, Naturopathy uses a variety of natural method of medicine which are gentle with very few side-effects, if any.

In conclusion

A disease does not just occur by chance, neither we are at the mercy of our genetics. Everything is a process with an identifiable cause and subsequently, an effect. The disease condition occurs as a consequence of deviation from the natural process. The way to health is by returning to the natural diet and lifestyle as mother nature intended us to be. Additionally, by utilising the healing power of nature, we can further support the recovery process.

Naturopathic medicine is an active treatment; you don’t just take medicine and sit back, awaiting healing to occur. If you have learned from everything I explained above, our unnatural diet and lifestyle are causing many diseases. Only by changing our diet and lifestyle, we can address the underlying cause of our illness at its core. Therefore, the only way to do that we must be actively making those changes.
